Now you can learn what SEO means, SEO Basics, and what can you do to help you optimize your website
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization, SEO for short, is one of the hottest topics today with regard to websites and generating traffic to web sites. What is search engine optimization? SEO is the art of changing a website such that it can, not only, be found by search engines but also increasing where it can be found within those organic search engine results. The ultimate goal is to be the very first option listed when a search engine returns its result. The secondary goal, in the event that the first position is not achieved, is to be listed on the first page of the search results. Why the first page? When a person searches the internet, studies show that they will most likely look only at the first page and on rare occasions, the second page. If you are like me and you do not see what you are looking for on the first or the second page, you will either go back to the first page or change your search term words altogether.
SEO Basics - How search engines find your site
There are a couple ways that a search engine can find your site. The first is that you can submit your site to the search engine itself. Most search engine companies include specific pages where you can enter the address of your website. Once you do, the engine will include it in its next web crawl to try and find your site. The drawback to this is that you will need to submit your site to whichever search engine you are looking to achieve ranking for.
Otherwise, in order to be included in the search engine, you will need to have other websites pointing to yours. This is called a "backlink" meaning that another website has a reference that links back to your site. The challenge here is that you will need to convince other websites to point to your website in order to have a backlink. This can be difficult, especially if you do not have quality information or services on your website. However, if you can achieve this, search engines will favor you over other similar websites and competitors. This is because search engines adopt a community approach to determining importance. The more that websites link to you for your topic, the more the search engines will see you as an authority. More importantly, this means that if you have more backlinks than your competitors, you will outrank them in the fight for search engine rankings.
What you can do to help optimize your site
It is a pretty is well-known fact that search engines can use complicated algorithms (calculations and measures) to determine what your website is about and how to rank them. These algorithms can change over time. Fortunately, they are now always made public. However, at a basic level, all search engines try and determine what your site is about from the content (words) that are posted on your site. This means that if you say that your website is about "Making money on the internet" the words and content on your website had better be about making money on the internet. This also means that you must have words on your website. The old saying states "A picture is worth a thousand words", however computers are not able determine if the picture is of little kittens or your latest product. So if you do include a picture on your site, you should also be sure to describe what is in the picture somewhere on the page.
Finally, your HTML programming will help search engines determine what your site is about, and, as a result, help you achieve better rankings. Therefore, make sure you make excellent use of tags.
